Before Gem, I was a miserable, hateful person who struggled with constant suicidal thoughts and didn't even like animals. I spent weeks praying to GOD for a change, and one night, I felt a sudden urge to check Petfinder. I saw a little dog with big ears and a crooked smile who looked just as lost as I felt. When I called, they said he was a rescue only, and for a while, I lost hope. Two weeks later, I checked again and saw he was at the Lake Norman Shelter. I called first thing that morning, set up a visit, and brought him home that evening. From that day on, it felt like God filled me with feelings I’d never known. My heart and mind shifted, and all my relationships with my kids, family, and friends—even myself—completely changed. I became kinder and more determined to be a better person. Some people might think I’m just grieving a dog, but I’m really grieving the one being who changed my broken heart without saying a word, just by loving me.
